The M21 & M22 is a four speed, RWD or 4WD transmission. The M21 & M22 is a Muncie engineering design, this transmission is aluminum case, extension housing and side cover. The side cover has seven bolts and two shift cams. The synchro rings have 35 teeth and the unit has a 4 step cluster gear.
The power range of the cam is in between 3500 and 6500. I know the M22Z has a 2:98 first gear with a wider spread in between gears but figure the ratios are higher too than the M22W so I figure it would still pull harder in 2nd and 3rd gear than the M22W would. The 2.20 low gear is just not low enough. If you want a 4 speed, get a Muncie M20 with a 2.52 low gear ratio.

Probably because the 2.20 ratio creates lower forces compared to M20 2.52 and M22Z 2.98 and also the shallow helix angle compared to M20 distribute the forces more evenly into the case which makes it hold up fine. At least this applies to use case of street tires on the street. Slicks on tracks might turn out different.

This stuff is starting to drive me crazy. First the carpet debacle now this. The case. says "C" M22 the gears seam to say M20/21. That absolutely and positively is an M20 (wide ratio). BOTH the angle of the gear teeth and the 2 grooves on the cluster gear are what determines that. Too bad the original M22 gears are not in the case.
